Shujaat Bukhari, targeted for long

IN Media Watch Briefs | 14/06/2018

Rising Kashmir proprietor and chief editor Shujaat Bukhari who was shot on Thursday night as he emerged from his office in Srinagar’s press colony and died shortly after, had two security guards flanking him who are critically injured. He has had police protection since an attack on him in 2000. In June 2006 while still a special correspondent of The Hindu, he was abducted at gunpoint in Srinagar but escaped although the kidnappers fired at him from close range. In this article for the Hoot in 2012 he had written about the vulnerability of journalists in Kashmir. In 2015 he gave this interview about the Kashmir Initiative Group he was part of and the intra-Kashmir dialogue he had helped initiate. More recently he brought a criminal defamation case against activist Madhu Kishwar for allegations she had made about him.

The new term for self censorship is voluntary censorship, as proposed by companies like Netflix and Hotstar. ET reports that streaming video service Amazon Prime is opposing a move by its peers to adopt a voluntary censorship code in anticipation of the Indian government coming up with its own rules. Amazon is resisting because it fears that it may alienate paying subscribers.

Clearly, the run to the 2019 elections is on. A journalist received a call from someone saying they were from Aajtak channel and were conducting a survey, asking whom she was going to vote for in 2019. On being told that her vote was secret, the caller assumed she wasn't going to vote for 'Modiji'. The caller, a woman, also didn't identify herself. A month or two earlier the same journalist received a call, this time from a man, asking if she was going to vote for the BSP.
