Shujaat Bukhari, targeted for long

Rising Kashmir proprietor and chief editor Shujaat Bukhari who was shot on Thursday night as he emerged from his office in Srinagar’s press colony and died shortly after, had two security guards flanking him who are critically injured. He has had police protection since an attack on him in 2000. In June 2006 while still a special correspondent of The Hindu, he was abducted at gunpoint in Srinagar but escaped although the kidnappers fired at him from close range. In this article for the Hoot in 2012 he had written about the vulnerability of journalists in Kashmir. In 2015 he gave this interview about the Kashmir Initiative Group he was part of and the intra-Kashmir dialogue he had helped initiate. More recently he brought a criminal defamation case against activist Madhu Kishwar for allegations she had made about him.
